Xume chair made from solid wood and recycled and recyclable PET

According to United Nations statistics, only about 9% of all the plastic produced since the 1950s has been recycled up to the present day. There is no doubt that our consumption patterns accumulate a large amount of waste, including plastic waste, which has become a problem that we must manage in order to reintroduce it into the market and avoid its incineration. PET felt is a new generation material that was initially developed in the automobile sector and, today Alki is using it to counter this problem. That’s why at Alki, we have chosen to include it as a new material for the Xume collection. PET felt is a new generation material that was initially developed in the automobile sector and, today Alki is using it to counter this problem.

PET felt is a type of high-performance felt made from recycled plastic bottles, specifically polyethylene terephthalate (PET). It involves a process where the bottles are decomposed and processed into fibers, which are then intertwined and compressed to form a felt material. This material is known for its durability, strength, and properties of thermal and acoustic insulation, as well as thermoforming. Our PET felt is produced in Europe and is available in four colors: light grey, dark grey, brown, and green. On the other hand, the chair’s structure is made of solid oak and can be finished in eight different colors, allowing for numerous versions of the Xume chair.

Jean Louis Iratzoki and Ander Lizaso are the designers of the Xume chair, which means “simple” or “essential” in Basque. It is a contemporary interpretation of a traditional chair with a wooden structure and a leather seat. In this case, the PET shell with its soft shapes fits into a curved solid oak structure. It can be easily disassembled and replaced. The chair is both sturdy and lightweight, and its seat, thanks to thermoforming, offers exceptional comfort. It is suitable for both domestic and hospitality environments.
