In the heart of Saint-Étienne, the Galerie nationale du design brings together and gives new life to public collections dedicated to design. As a place for exhibition and transmission, it highlights objects and the ways in which they accompany our everyday uses. In this space open to the public, furniture plays an essential role in the museum experience.
For the mezzanine, a competition was launched to imagine furniture capable of supporting the many functions of the space. Alki won the competition alongside designers Marie Cornil and Alexandre Willaume, from the duo Marie et Alexandre, with the Bildua collection, conceived to become part of the daily life of this place. In Basque, this word means to gather, to wrap, or to store away.
Born from a reflection on learning, collectiveness and transmission, Bildua is composed of simple, modular and durable objects whose uses remain deliberately open. The family includes a chair, with or without armrests, a table, a desk, dividers and cushions. Through its different typologies, Bildua creates a practical and welcoming landscape. Its simple, graphic forms bring a presence that is both warm and sensitive.
“Designed to support a wide range of uses, the chair is stackable and fits just as naturally into domestic interiors as into collective spaces such as bistros, cafés or terraces. Conceived with a minimum amount of material, it combines a light metal structure with two solid wood elements that both stiffen, constrain and reinforce the whole.”— Marie et Alexandre
The seating collection will be edited by Alki in the coming months.
